“I had completed the field work for my last book with only one week left before the end of the summer bus service put the fell out of reach. Thus a thirteen year plan was finished one week ahead of schedule.”
A Wainwright, Some personal notes in conclusion, A Pictorial Guide to the Lakeland Fells, Book Seven,The Western Fells, 1966
This song recognises the daunting thirteen year task involved in completing the pictorial guides to the Lakeland fells. It is quite remarkable that he was committed throughout and completed it one week ahead of schedule!
It also draws attention to some of Wainwright’s personal characteristics and idiosyncratic views of the world. Some of these are not so attractive, but no doubt they contributed to his project’s successful conclusion. One example is that at at the end of book seven, even after selling so many books, Wainwright was still insisting on using public transport, despite many offers to drive him around by car!
lyrics
It's true that I am crotchety
Stubborn and headstrong
Cantankerous and curmudgeonly
It's to my task I'm wedded
In truth I do love animals
More than the common man
So leave me to my private ways
Let me wander as I can
