had been so utterly sure that in you I had found the girl I had dreamed about for forty years, who so often comforted my loneliest hours…
Letter 137: To Betty, 23 October 1967, The Wainwright Letters, edited by Hunter Davies, p207, 2011
Wainwright’s love affair with Betty was not without its complications. The above quote is from a letter he wrote to her following an argument. It is apparent that Betty had misgivings about committing to him. She was a lively and sociable woman with a lot going on in her life. And for a time there was another, American, suitor on the scene (ironically introduced to her by Wainwright), who was very much in love with her.
This balad is written from Betty's viewpoint and highlights some of the things that must have gone through her mind on the way to becoming "Red's" husband.
lyrics
He's written Lakeland walking guides
which seem to me sublime
Lovely maps and sketches
hand written prose that seems just fine
He is a well known fellow of stature in this town
Shall I welcome his advances
or give hime the run around?
